The Criminal Court in El Jadida sentenced Moroccan live-streamer Ilyas Elmaliki to three months in prison on Thursday after trying him on charges stemming from complaints from women’s associations, according to media reports.
The court convicted Elmaliki of “inciting discrimination and hatred” through social media, discriminating based on gender, and spreading false claims with the intent to harm individuals’ private lives and defame them. He was also found guilty of slandering and insulting women due to their gender, as well as committing psychological, economic, and sexual violence against women.
Approximately 38 women’s and human rights associations had filed complaints with the public prosecutor regarding Elmaliki’s online content.
In a separate case, the El Jadida court sentenced Elmaliki on Tuesday to four months in prison and imposed a fine of 5,000 MAD for “public indecency.” However, he was acquitted of charges related to inciting hatred and discrimination—charges initially filed by Amazigh associations and individuals who later withdrew their complaints.
