The Andalusian-Moroccan Friendship Association, aka the “Ibn Rushd Forum,” has announced that it is currently accepting nominations for the 2nd Ibn Rushd (Averroes) Award for creating “Harmony” between Spain and Morocco.
The award recognizes and encourages outstanding contributions from institutional actors or individuals that promote mutual understanding, coexistence, and dialogue between the two nations. It also furthers the values of freedom, human rights, peace, justice, and environmental protection in both Morocco and Spain.
The award is named after the ancient Andalusian philosopher Ibn Rushd. A 12th-century polymath and jurist, Ibn Rushd was born in Cordoba, Spain, and died in Marrakech, Morocco. He embodied the values of tolerance, coexistence, freedom, interculturalism, and the promotion of dialogue, all factors that promote concord among human beings.
The award named in his honor also recognizes those whose actions support women’s rights, tolerance, and integration in both countries.
The winners will be announced in March. There will be one for Spanish institutions or individuals, and another for Moroccan entities or individuals.
The Ibn Rushd Forum, which includes over 200 members across both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar, is dedicated to fostering mutual knowledge through various activities. The association also contributes to improving bilateral relations through parallel cultural diplomacy, creating spaces for ongoing dialogue and understanding.
The first Ibn Rushd Award went to Moroccan scholar and human rights activist Abdelkader Chaoui after he also received the “Concord Prize” along with the Director of Spain’s renowned Cervantes Institute, Luis García Montero.
