Morocco has made significant strides in global climate leadership, after taking 8th place in the 2025 Climate Change Performance Index (CCPI), falling from the 7th position taken last year, unveiled during COP29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, Morocco’s News Agency (MAP) reported.
The Kingdom, which is ranked first in Africa and the Arab world, has outpaced several nations, including Germany, Norway, and Sweden, in this year’s rankings.
Morocco has maintained its position as a regional leader in sustainability and carbon neutrality, consistently recognized for its efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and accelerate the adoption of renewable energy.
The CCPI experts highlighted Morocco’s commitment to sustainable development, noting its ambitious goal to achieve 52% renewable energy in its national energy mix by 2030.
Morocco’s progress in solar and wind energy projects has further solidified its place among the top performers.
The index evaluates 63 countries based on four criteria: greenhouse gas emissions, renewable energy, energy use, and climate policies.
The CCPI serves as an independent tool to assess the effectiveness of climate policies globally, including individual European Union member states.
This accomplishment further positions Morocco as a key player in the fight against climate change, continuing to inspire other nations to strengthen their climate commitments as the world moves towards 2030.
Last year, Morocco was ranked 7th at CCPI’s performance, thanks to its policies in GHG Emissions, Energy Use, and Climate Policy.
