Mali’s Head of the military, Colonel Assimi Goita, appointed Abdoulaye Maïga as Prime Minister on Thursday after firing Choguel Kokalla Maïga after he criticized military leaders. Prior to his PM appointment, Abdoulaye Maïga served as government spokesman.
The West African nation, grappling with jihadist and separatist violence, has been under military rule since two consecutive coups in 2020 and 2021.
“Major General Abdoulaye Maïga is appointed prime minister,” according to a decree issued by Goita and read out by the secretary general of the presidency on state television station “ORTM.”
Kokalla Maïga publicly condemned the lack of clarity on Saturday regarding the end of the transition to civilian rule.
In June 2022, the military pledged to hold elections and transfer power to civilians by March 2024, but later postponed elections indefinitely.
