Morocco’s Minister of Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Leila Benali highlighted Morocco’s unique position as the sole energy and trade corridor connecting Europe, Africa, and the Atlantic basin in a speech at the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Benali noted Morocco’s role as an essential hub for trade and investment for various major economic powers such as Europe, the US, and China, Morocco’s News Agency (MAP) reported.
She cited a Bloomberg report that designated Morocco, Vietnam, Poland, Mexico, and Indonesia as “connectors in a balkanizing global economy.”
The economic output of those five countries alone in 2022 was USD 4 trillion, surpassing India and nearly matching such production giants as Germany and Japan, the report said.
Benali reiterated Morocco’s vision of bolstering its position as a “corridor,” with the power to “reconfigure” global supply chains.
She noted Morocco’s efforts in producing and exporting green energy to Europe, taking advantage of the Kingdom’s robust renewable energy resources while adhering to international standards.
Announcing Morocco’s goal of quintupling its renewable energy output by 2030, Benali asserted, “The Kingdom enjoys the respect and trust of its international partners and honors its sustainability commitments.”
The 29th UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) is currently underway in Baku, Azerbaijan, and runs until November 22, 2024.
