At the 43rd Sharjah International Book Fair, where Morocco is featured as the guest of honor, Moroccan publishers are showcasing their unique work that delves into Amazigh culture, a central element of Morocco’s ancestral national identity, Morocco’s News Agency (MAP) said.
This event provides a platform for visitors to explore the rich heritage and deep-rooted indigenous traditions of Moroccan Amazigh communities. With over 100 Moroccan authors and academics, showcasing their work including literature exploring language, customs, and artistic expressions that reflect Morocco’s diverse cultural landscape.
Among the highlighted works is “From Amazigh Moroccan Culture” by Zoubir Mehdad, which offers readers an in-depth look at the lives of Moroccan Amazigh people, particularly those in the Sahara.
This book sheds light on various aspects of Amazigh life, from language and social customs to arts and traditions, making it an essential resource for those interested in understanding the unique cultural fabric of Amazigh communities.
Another featured work, “The Lioness of Haha” by Moroccan author Malika Ratnan, revisits the historical struggles of the Haha region’s Amazigh people against Portuguese invasions. Through this novel, Ratnan not only pays homage to the region’s painful history but also emphasizes the importance of using the past to inspire national pride and a forward-looking perspective.
Robert Montagne’s “The Social and Political Life of the Berbers” is also part of the display, providing historical insights into the relationships between Arabs and Amazigh, and exploring the role of Arab tribes in the formation of a unified Moroccan state.
Another noteworthy book, “Islam and Amazigh Culture” by Tijani Boulaouali, examines the intersections between Amazigh identity and Islam, including contributions from scholars like Hassan Id Balkacem and Ahmed Boukous.
Under the theme “Morocco of Cultures at Sharjah Book Fair,” the Moroccan delegation also features 107 cultural activities, including literary discussions, art exhibitions, and culinary presentations showcasing Moroccan gastronomy.
Additionally, the fair offers theater performances, art workshops, and showcases more than 4,000 titles from 25 Moroccan publishers, providing an immersive cultural experience for all attendees.
