British daily newspaper The Guardian announced on Wednesday that it will no longer post any of its content on Elon Musk’s social media platform X due to “often disturbing content promoted or found on the platform, including far-right conspiracy theories and racism.”
“We wanted to let readers know that we will no longer post on any official Guardian editorial accounts on the social media site X,” the Guardian said.
The venerable newspaper, now more than 100 years old, has about 80 accounts on X with approximately 27 million followers.
In a message to its audience, it asserted that Musk had used X to “shape the political discourse” during the 2024 United States presidential campaign, a factor which “had crystallized its decision.”
Musk strongly supported and rallied for Republican candidate Donald Trump and bankrolled his campaign to the tune of USD 200 million via “an independent expenditure-only political action committee” (Super PAC), according to AP.
The Guardian said users would still be able to share articles on X and that it will continue to embed posts from the platform for reporting purposes.
“The nature of live news reporting means we will still occasionally embed content from X within our article pages,” it said.
