Intense wildfires have erupted across parts of New York and New Jersey which started Friday, with officials issuing air quality alerts due to heavy smoke blanketing the region, Al Jazeera reported.
The blaze has consumed more than 1,200 hectares and is only 10% contained, according to the New Jersey Forest Fire Service.
Communities across the region are on high alert as shifting winds push the fire closer to residential areas and local parks.
The fire spanned approximately 12 square kilometers. Dariel Vasquez, a park worker from New York, was killed while fighting the flames in Sterling Forest over the weekend. The 38-year-old died after being struck by a falling tree on Saturday, according to state officials.
Health authorities in New York and New Jersey have issued air quality alerts, cautioning residents, particularly those with respiratory conditions, to limit time spent outdoors.
Meanwhile, wildfires in California also remain active but are reported to be semi-contained. Strong winds have fueled several fires across the Golden State, where thousands have been evacuated.
With unpredictable weather conditions, firefighters in New York and New Jersey are preparing for what could be an extended battle against the flames.
