Morocco has sent a delegation led by Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch to the 29th UN Climate Change Conference (known as COP29) that is taking place from Nov. 11 to 22 in Baku, Azerbaijan. As leaders from around the world meet to advance global climate action, Morocco’s delegation includes Morocco’s Minister of Energy and Sustainable Development Leila Benali and Morocco’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Mohamed Adil Embarch.
Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres welcomed the Moroccan delegation to Baku’s Olympic Stadium on Tuesday where the meeting is taking place.
The Moroccan delegation has already visited the national pavilions of both Morocco and Azerbaijan and engaged in discussions on renewable energy and climate achievements.
COP29 is prioritizing climate finance, recognizing the urgent need for funds to support countries in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protecting communities from the worsening impacts of climate change. In particular, it is focusing on the importance of mobilizing resources to support developing countries, especially those most vulnerable to climate disruptions.
Morocco, known for its substantial investments in solar and wind energy, aims to further enhance its role in international climate efforts. Morocco’s participation reflects its ongoing commitment to sustainable growth and leadership in renewable energy.
Key topics at the conference include strategies for expanding clean energy capacity, adapting to climate risks, and building resilient infrastructure.
