Moroccan Royal Armed Forces (FAR) have launched a drone strike that killed a senior Polisario separatist leader and other members following an attack on the town of Mahbes in Morocco’s southern Sahara region, according to well-informed sources.
Armed Polisario fighters fired four projectiles at Mahbes in Assa-Zag province on Saturday. Sources reported that the projectiles landed near tents where civilians gathered to mark the 49th anniversary of Morocco’s Green March. The attack caused no casualties or significant damage.
The separatist forces conducted the attack from four all-terrain vehicles, reportedly moving close to Morocco’s borders.
Authorities believe Polisario militias launched the projectiles from across the border, but the rockets fell into an uninhabited desert area, away from the anniversary celebrations.
This incident follows another recent attack in which Polisario vehicles attempted to infiltrate the buffer zone, prompting the Moroccan military to destroy the vehicles with a drone strike.
