Violent clashes erupted between Israeli football fans and pro-Palestine demonstrators in Amsterdam, leading local police to arrest 62 suspects on Friday.
The attacks happened outside the Johan Cruyff Arena on Thursday night before and after a Europa League football match between Israeli team “Maccabi Tel Aviv” and Netherlands “Ajax Amsterdam.”
Videos circulating on social media showed Israeli fans shouting anti-Arab slogans in the streets, waving Israeli flags, and taking down Palestinian flags in the days leading up to the match, local media reported.
Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof said he was “horrified by the anti-Semitic attacks on Israeli citizens. This is completely unacceptable.”
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent two rescue planes to the Netherlands on Friday for the Maccabi teams’ supporters that were still in Amsterdam.
