Five regions in Morocco account for 71.2% of the kingdom’s total population, according to the 2024 census. The regions are Casablanca-Settat, Rabat-Salé-Kenitra, Marrakech-Safi, Fes-Meknes and Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima.
Morocco’s Statistics Office (HCP) showcased the findings in a report on the country’s legal population distribution by regions, provinces, prefectures, and communes collected during the 2024 Census.
The Casablanca metropolitan area leads with 7.689 million inhabitants, making up 20.9% of Morocco’s total population. It is followed by Rabat-Salé-Kenitra with 5.133 million residents, Marrakech-Safi with 4.892 million, Fes-Meknes with 4.468 million, and Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima with 4.030 million residents.
The rest of the population is distributed across other regions, including Souss-Massa (3.02 million) and Dakhla-Oued Eddahab (220,000).
Urbanization in Morocco reached 62.8% in 2024, up from 60.4% in 2014. Laayoune-Sakia El Hamra recorded the highest urbanization rate at 92.4%, followed by Dakhla-Oued Eddahab at 80.4%, Casablanca-Settat at 73.3%, and Rabat-Salé-Kenitra at 70.7%. Marrakech-Safi had the lowest rate at 46.0%, with Draa-Tafilalet at 36.7%.
