Vice President Kamala Harris congratulated President-elect Donald Trump on Wednesday on his victory in the presidential election, according to a senior Harris aide, international media reported.
The official said Harris also discussed the importance of a seamless transfer of power and called for leadership that represents all Americans.
Trump campaign spokesperson, Steven Cheung, confirmed the call and added that President Trump commended Harris for her “strength, professionalism and tenacity” throughout the campaign.
Both leaders acknowledged a shared commitment to fostering national unity.
The call took place hours before Harris was scheduled to deliver a national address. She is scheduled to deliver a speech at Howard University in Washington, D.C., at 4 p.m. ET, the venue that supporters had hoped would be the site of her victory party.
The White House also confirmed that President Joe Biden spoke with Trump on Wednesday.
