American republican Donald Trump thanked Americans on Wednesday for reelecting him President of the United States, pledging to usher in a “golden age” for the United State.
Speaking to a gathering of supporters in Palm Beach, Florida, the Republican candidate claimed an “unprecedented political victory” in the US and vowed to seek “unity.”
“Every day, I will fight for you,” Trump stated, promising a series of reforms, particularly in immigration policy.
Trump’s family members joined him during his speech along with his running mate senator JD Vance, and the Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson.
Fox News announced Trump the winner, although the Associated Press (the unofficial most relied upon caller of US elections) reported for hours that Trump had secured only 267 of the 270 electoral votes needed to win the White House
Republicans appear to have gained the majority in the U.S. Senate, previously held by Democrats, winning 51 seats to the Democrats’ 49 with votes still being counted. Republicans are also leading in the House of Representatives.
The win would make Trump only the second US president to serve two non-consecutive terms. The first was Grover Cleveland, who served two separate terms in the late 1800s as the 22nd and 24th president, one before and one after President Benjamin Harrison.
