French retail giant Carrefour announced on Monday it will shutter all its stores in Jordan, following a boycott movement that had targeted the French company over its support for Israel.
Beginning today, Carrefour will cease all operations in Jordan, according to a statement the company shared on Facebook.
The retail chain’s exit from Jordan follows a broader boycott wave that began in October 2023, as customers across Arab and Islamic countries pushed back against brands supporting Israel.
Widespread protests and calls for economic action have intensified, with consumers avoiding companies with ties to Israel or perceived to benefit from the country’s ongoing military aggression in Gaza.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza remains devastating, with over 43,000 lives lost—predominantly women and children—and more than 102,000 people wounded, according to local health officials.
Israel’s military aggression has continued despite international outcry and a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire.
Boycotts aren’t limited to Carrefour or Jordan. Major brands across other sectors, from essential goods to pharmaceuticals, are facing similar pressures.
Israel now faces a genocide case at the International Court of Justice over its actions in Gaza.
