The 13th International Date Forum in Erfoud in southeast central Morocco drew over 91,000 visitors and 230 exhibitors last week, showcasing the resilience of Morocco’s oases against climate change. Held from October 30 to November 3, the expo featured workshops, date tastings, and discussions on important topics related to sustainable agriculture.
This year’s theme, “Moroccan Oases: Toward Systems Capable of Adapting to Climate Change,” spotlighted Morocco’s efforts to reinforce its oasis ecosystems. Discussions focused on managing the ongoing water scarcity crisis and improving cultivation methods to address climate challenges.
Sponsored by Morocco’s Ministry of Agriculture and the International Date Forum Association held, the forum brought together national and international specialists to discuss ways to adapt to climate change and grow the country’s date industry.
Jamal Mimouni, Regional Director of Agriculture in the Drâa-Tafilalet region, said attendance at this year’s forum surpassed previous for a, featuring 235 exhibitors from Morocco and nine other countries.
This year’s sales exceeded MAD 37 million, a strong indicator of the forum’s economic impact. Mimouni emphasized the forum’s role in enhancing Morocco’s date production, an industry “vital” to the kingdom’s economy.
Abdelwahab Zayed, Secretary General of the Khalifa International Award for Date Palm and Agricultural Innovation, said with its effective organization and excellent quality of products, the forum is encouraging valuable collaboration among international and local industry players.
A key part of Morocco’s agricultural policy, the forum has become a crucial platform for connecting Moroccan date producers with global markets, supporting sustainable practices, and strengthening the resilience of the country’s oasis ecosystems.
