Atlanta rapper known as “Young Thug,” born Jeffrey Lamar Williams, pleaded guilty on Thursday to his involvement in criminal street gang activity, closing Georgia’s longest-running trial which lasted almost two years.
The plea deal spares the 33-year-old from a potentially lengthy prison sentence, instead granting him 15 years on probation and community service.
Williams has been incarcerated since his May 2022 arrest on allegations of leading a gang named “Young Slime Life” (YSL), frequently referenced in his music. YSL members were accused of serious crimes, including murder, armed robbery, drug trafficking, and carjacking.
Superior Court Judge Paige Whitaker asked Williams if he understood and accepted the terms of the plea, which he confirmed after a brief recess, according to NBC News. In keeping with probation orders, Judge Whitaker warned that any violations could lead to a 20-year custodial sentence.
The rapper’s probation terms prohibit him from traveling within the urban area of metro Atlanta and from associating with YSL members. He is also required to deliver community presentations to educate children and groups about the dangers of gang violence.
“There better be no violations, but if there are any, you’re coming back to see me,” the Judge cautioned.
