France’s “firm commitment” in support of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara is causing a recalibration in European politics, prompting governments to “reconsider” their position on the regional dispute, France’s President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday in an interview with channel 2M on Wednesday.
During his three-day state visit to Morocco which concluded yesterday, Macron said that France’s support for Morocco on the Sahara issue goes beyond traditional diplomatic ties and encompasses strengthening regional stability through a cohesive European response.
As French companies and entities such as the French Development Agency expand their projects in Morocco into areas such as renewable energy, desalination, infrastructure, and ports, Macron believes the new Moroccan-French relationship could serve as a regional model for European-Mediterranean partnerships. Macron described these efforts a “future-focused strategy.”
Reflecting on the “unique history” binding Morocco and France, Macron commended the more than 20 new bilateral agreements the two countries signed this week during his visit which involve the public and private sectors and include key renewable energy initiatives, infrastructure projects, and expanded trade.
“Our partnership with Morocco is built on a clear commitment to regional stability and prosperity,” Macron stated. He noted that Europe’s support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara will play a pivotal role in fostering peace and security throughout the Sahel regions.
