Morocco’s Demlij Cultural and Arts Troupe will perform its play entitled “Boryoss” on the stage at this year’s ninth Sharm El Sheikh International Youth Theater Festival to be held in Egypt from November 15 to 20, Morocco’s News Agency (MAP) reported.
“Boryoss” is a psychological drama that takes a dive into the human psyche through the eyes of “Meloudi,” a young man who wants to reunite with his wife “Rahab.”
The psychological journey of Meloudi, accompanied by his friend, challenges the audience’s perception of reality and puts into question the nature of good and evil.
Director of the play Sami Saadallah gave his leading character a hazy perception of reality, that keeps the audience questioning whether what is happening on stage is an actual event or a mad man’s delusional episode.
Boryoss is one of hundreds of entries this year. Festival founder Mazen El Gharbawy said in a press conference that the selection committee had received 600 theatrical submissions from 63 countries.
The festival program includes various workshops, including “Mime Acting,” “The Actor from Theater to Cinema,” “Improvisation and Different Perspectives,” and “Children’s Journey into Theater,” led by various Arab and international theater artists.
This year’s festival honors the late Egyptian director Galal El Sharkawy with the play Boryoss by the Damlej Troupe for Culture and Arts, competing in the main performance category.
El Sharkawy was a towering figure in Egyptian theater before he passed away on February 4, 2022.
He left an indelible mark on Arab cinema and theater through his work as a director, educator, and author.
He is most known for producing some of Egypt’s most beloved plays. His work includes numerous hits, including Ateya the Terrorist, West Side Story, and the iconic The School of the Misfits, which remains his most celebrated production.
