Morocco was re-elected to the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture (SPT) for the 2025-2028 term during the 10th Meeting of States Parties in Geneva, Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Ministry announced today.
The reelection of Morocco reflects the international community’s confidence in the Kingdom’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights and highlights the credibility of the country’s efforts to tackle global challenges that impede individuals from fully enjoying their economic, social, and cultural rights, according to the Ministry.
The Kingdom will be represented on the Subcommittee by Omar Battas, a professor at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy at Hassan II University in Casablanca and Director of the Psychiatry Department. He is a recognized authority on torture prevention. His most recent publication is entitled “Management of the Health Emergency in Morocco: Security and Human Rights.”
The Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture plays a vital role in the UN’s human rights protection system. Its mandate focuses on a proactive approach to preventing torture and mis-treatment, including visits to prisons and detention centers and monitoring the treatment of detainees. It also provides guidance to national prevention programs to protect the human rights of prisoners.
