UN Secretary-General António Guterres commended Morocco for its strong cooperation and proactive engagement with UN human rights mechanisms, in his last report.
He also acknowledged the country’s contributions to promoting and protecting human rights through its collaboration with international bodies.
The UN official referenced several letters from the Moroccan government to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in July 2024, highlighting Morocco’s cooperation with Special Rapporteurs and its constructive engagement with the UN human rights framework.
Guterres noted that Morocco’s National Council for Human Rights (CNDH) had provided the UN with information on its work to protect and promote fundamental freedoms and human rights, particularly in the southern provinces.
The Council’s work on capacity-building, complaints handling, and mediation in business disputes was highlighted, as well as its reports on visits to detention centers, which have contributed to improved conditions for detainees in the region.
The UNSG also recognized Morocco’s full cooperation with the UN’s thematic special procedures. Since 2011, 12 UN Special Rapporteurs have visited Morocco, six of whom also visited the Moroccan Sahara.
Looking ahead to 2024-2025, Morocco has invited six more UN Special Rapporteurs, four of whom have already confirmed their visits.
