The Spanish police, in collaboration with Morocco’s Territorial Surveillance Agency (DGST), arrested two individuals, including a minor, on Monday in Melilla for allegedly having been involved with active jihadist cells, according to well informed sources.
The arrest followed a recent anti-terrorism operation by the Spanish police, in which they apprehended a man in Aviles, northern Spain, on October 18, who was charged with disseminating pro-Islamic State (IS) messages on social media, inciting violence, and “glorifying” the actions of the terrorist group along with its extremist propaganda.
Authorities discovered the two suspects in possession of documents related to international jihadist organizations. They are suspected of attempting to recruit young members for terrorist activities in Europe and North Africa.
Investigations are ongoing to determine whether these individuals were part of a larger network supporting terrorist groups operating in the region.
Since the beginning of 2024, several joint operations between Moroccan and Spanish authorities have dismantled recruitment and funding networks associated with the Islamic State group.
