The Republic of Ecuador suspended on Tuesday its recognition of the self-proclaimed “Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic” (SADR), first recognized in 1983 with the opening of an embassy in 2009.
Ecuador’s Foreign Minister, Gabriela Sommerfeld, notified Morocco’s Foreign Minister, Nasser Bourita, of the decision during a telephone conversation.
She also sent an official notice to the separatist group’s representatives in the capital Quito.
The move aligns with Morocco’s ongoing efforts, led by King Mohammed VI, to affirm its sovereignty over the Sahara and promote the autonomy plan as the sole credible solution to the regional dispute. It also opens a new promising stage in relations between the Kingdom and the Latin American country.
