Algerian journalist Hichem Aboud, who works for the Spanish media outlet Atalayar, has been missing for at least three days since arriving in Spain on Thursday, Atalayr reported, raising concerns that he may be kidnapped.
Aboud, a well-known political opponent and critic of the Algerian regime who has lived in exile since 1997, disappeared after traveling from Paris to Madrid. His lawyer, Dalil Essakali Moulay Abdeljalil, stated concerns that Aboud may have been abducted by the Algerian authorities, given previous attempts on his life.
A few hours before his disappearance, the journalist had shared a video revealing renewed threats from Algerian intelligence services.
He has been a target of several international arrest warrants and convictions in absentia related to his writings and videos criticizing the government. He last contacted his lawyer on October 17 to confirm his travel plans. Aboud did not contact anyone upon his arrival in Spain, prompting fears for his whereabouts and safety.
Aboud’s critics in Algeria label him a ‘traitor’ and ‘terrorist’ for his opposition to the military regime led by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune. His works at Atalayar and through his YouTube channel have focused on exposing the corruption and abuses of Algeria’s military regime, leading to widespread vilification in Algeria’s state-controlled media.
He became a prominent figure in the Hirak movement, thanks to his activism and strong online presence, providing inspiration to many demonstrators.
