Morocco has launched its first direct flight between Marrakech and Reykjavik, with Play Airlines operating two weekly flights starting Thursday.
The move is part of an agreement between the Moroccan National Tourism Office (ONMT) and Play Airlines. The partnership is intended to boost tourism from Iceland and North America, with plans for joint marketing campaigns to promote Morocco in these regions.
Reykjavik’s airport serves as a hub for flights between Scandinavia, Western Europe, and North America. Play Airlines flies to five North American cities—New York, Washington, Baltimore, Boston, and Toronto—making it easier for travelers from the U.S. and Canada to connect to Morocco via Iceland.
Iceland is a strategic tourism market for Morocco. Earlier this year, ONMT ran several campaigns to attract tourists from Scandinavia, including a major promotional event in May 2024.
The ONMT has doubled the number of flights between Morocco and the Scandinavian countries for the winter of 2024.
The flights include direct routes from major European cities, such as Stockholm, Helsinki, and Oslo, to Marrakech and Agadir, two of Morocco’s most popular tourist destinations.
