Morocco has extended its fishing agreement with Russia until the end of 2024, according to Spanish media reports, on Wednesday.
The extension comes on the heels of a recent ruling by the European Court of Justice that annulled the fishing agreements between Morocco and the European Union (EU).
Originally signed in Rabat on September 14, 2020, and in Moscow on October 14 of the same year, the agreement focuses on various aspects of maritime fisheries.
According to a report from the specialized website Fishnews cited in the news reports, the partnership seeks to enhance scientific research, develop fishing technologies and equipment, improve fish processing methods, and expand aquaculture initiatives.
The agreement allows Russian vessels to fish for small fish in the Atlantic zone, with fees paid to Morocco in exchange for access.
Earlier this month, both parties exchanged memoranda to extend the agreement, with negotiations for future years already underway.
