A 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit eastern Turkey’s Malatya province on Wednesday at 07:46 a.m. GMT in the Kale region, around 40 kilometers east of Malatya city, Reuters reported based on the republic’s e Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD).
The European Mediterranean Seismological Centre measured the earthquake at a magnitude of 6.1, noting that it occurred at a depth of 9 kilometers.
Despite the quake’s strength, initial reports indicate that there were no immediate casualties or significant damage. AFAD has activated emergency protocols, stating that their teams “are on alert and conducting field scanning operations to assess any potential impact.”
The tremors were also felt across the border in Syria, particularly in the provinces of Hasakah, Deir al-Zor, and Aleppo. Residents reported shaking. but no immediate reports of damage were reported in these areas.
