Heavy rain in southern Morocco has altered the landscape of the Sahara Desert over the last month. After intense downpours in September, what are normally arid sand dunes are now surrounded by lakes and dotted with trees.
Rare rainfall caused flooding in the Sahara desert, nourishing some of its most drought-stricken regions with more water than many had seen in decades.

This rare phenomenon, the result of the heaviest rainfall in over 30 years in the region, has primarily impacted the eastern slopes of the Atlas Mountains.
While the rains have brought much-needed water, they also claimed 18 lives, caused significant infrastructure damage, and destroyed private property.
