The United States has warned Israel that it may face an arms embargo if it fails to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza within 30 days, according to news reports on Tuesday.
The warning comes amid rising concern in Washington over the worsening humanitarian situation in Gaza, according to a letter reportedly sent to Israel’s Defense Minister Yoav Gallant by the Biden Administration.
Israeli media reported that both Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and Defense Minister Yoav Gallant received the letter, which outlined U.S. expectations regarding humanitarian aid to Gaza.
The letter called on Israel to honor its March 2024 commitment to allow the transfer of American or U.S.-supported humanitarian aid into Gaza. It also stated that the U.S. State Department would conduct an audit to ensure compliance with aid laws.
Humanitarian aid to Gaza has sharply declined since March, reaching its lowest point in September. Rights groups have sounded the alarm, accusing Israel of employing a starvation strategy in Northern Gaza.
Last week, the United Nations reported that no food has entered the Gaza Strip since October 1, leaving one million Palestinians at risk of starvation.
