Mohamed Ould Errachid, Morocco’s Speaker of the Upper House, met on Monday, with Rodrigo Pacheco, President of the Brazilian Senate, who is currently on a working visit to Morocco, to review the status of parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.
Ould Errachid welcomed Pacheco’s visit, noting that it would further strengthen the relationship between the Upper House and the Brazilian Senate, the Upper House said in a press release.
He highlighted that “parliamentary ties between the two institutions are part of a broader effort to enhance the bilateral relations between Morocco and Brazil.”
The Moroccan-Brazilian ties were notably reinforced by King Mohammed VI’s visit to several Latin American countries, including Brazil, in 2004, which resulted in various bilateral agreements across political, economic, and cultural areas.
Ould Errachid pointed out that “the Atlantic Initiative seeks to establish a strong institutional framework uniting the 23 countries bordering the Atlantic Ocean,” adding that “this initiative positions Morocco’s Atlantic coast as a starting point for enhancing logistical connections between both shores.”
The Moroccan official highlighted cooperation guided by a 2018 memorandum promoting dialogue and exchanges, while Ould Errachid welcomed Brazil’s support for Morocco’s Autonomy Plan and urged stronger backing for its efforts to resolve the Sahara conflict.
Pacheco commended “the robust and deep-rooted” ties between Brazil and Morocco in political, economic, and cultural spheres, as well as in climate change-related issues.
He highlighted the role of parliamentary diplomacy in strengthening strategic Morocco-Brazil relations and underscored the need to enhance economic and trade cooperation between the two countries, leveraging their significant resources.
Pacheco noted that “geographical distance is no longer a barrier,” shedding light on “the importance his country places on the Royal Atlantic Initiative, which reinforces Morocco’s stance as the gateway to the African continent.”
The President of the Brazilian Senate invited Ould Errachid to visit Brazil to further explore opportunities for bilateral and multilateral parliamentary cooperation and to engage in consultations on various issues of mutual interest.
