Morocco’s tourist accommodation establishments (EHTC) recorded over 18.7 million overnight stays as of the end of August this year, a significant 7% increase compared to the same period last year, according to Morocco’s Tourism Observatory.
Although domestic tourism fell 4%, the increase was driven by a 13% increase in international travel, according to the Observatory’s August 2024 tourism figures.
Key destinations such as Agadir (+17%), Al Haouz (+15%), Marrakech (+8%), Casablanca (+6%), Essaouira (+4%), and Rabat (+3%) all posted positive results compared to August 2023.
Total foreign currency travel revenues generated by non-residents visiting Morocco were at MAD 76.4 billion over the first eight months of 2024, up 6.7% from MAD 71.63 billion in 2023.
In August alone, overnight stays at EHTC rose 6% year-on-year. Major tourist cities showed mixed performances, with Al Hoceima leading the increase (+75%), followed by Al Haouz (+13%), Marrakech (+7%), Agadir and Tangier (both +6%). Meanwhile, Essaouira and Casablanca had declines of 8% and 3%, respectively.
