Morocco’s Meteorological Agency reported on Sunday that September 2024 was marked by unusually unstable weather, with particularly heavy rainfall across the kingdom.
The agency detected significant climate anomalies affecting the region, leading to exceptional weather events.
According to the report, an unprecedented shift in the intertropical front, a weather system usually associated with tropical regions, moved northward from the African Sahara. This unusual movement triggered intense downpours, which were especially severe in certain areas.
Meteorologists linked the unusual weather patterns to rising global temperatures, stating that the warming climate is leading to increased atmospheric instability. As the oceans warm, greater evaporation rates are contributing to more extreme weather events around the world, including Morocco.
The agency also noted the severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall in Morocco’s southern and southeastern regions, which resulted in widespread flooding last month.
The Directorate described the events as a sign of “exceptional climatic and atmospheric instability.”
