The Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) held a ceremony on Sunday in Saïdia city near Oujda to honor 15 former international football players from Morocco’s eastern region.
The Federation recognized Mohamed El Filali, Kamal Smiri, Rachid Nekrouz, Mohamed Merzak, Mustapha Tahiri, El Hachmi El Brazi, Hmida Boushaba, Houssine Bouchkhachakh, Yahia El Harasse, Hassan Alla, Abdelhafid Fekkoul, Alaa Eddine Tmimi, Mohamed Biad, Mohamed El Idrissi, and Hmida Belhiouane.
These players contributed significantly to Moroccan football having had long careers with clubs such as Mouloudia Club d’Oujda (MCO) and Renaissance Sportive de Berkane (RSB).
The speakers at the ceremony highlighted the importance of having such ceremonies to promote a culture of recognition and gratitude. They suggested such events need to be held across other regions of the country.
This symbolic tribute acknowledged the players’ efforts and sacrifices, which have helped establish the reputation of Moroccan football on both the African continent and internationally.
Jamal Kaouachi and Mohamed Houar, members of the FRMF board of directors representing FRMF president Fouzi Lekjaa, attended, along with Walid Regragui, the Moroccan national team’s coach. A number of other members of the national squad attended the ceremony as well.
Speaking to the press afterward, Regragui said, “We must not forget these former players who have made their mark on the history of Moroccan football.” He added that both the younger generations and their predecessors are part of the same football family, and it’s important to connect the past with the present.
Kaouachi stated that this ceremony bridges the gap between generations and promotes a culture of appreciation in Moroccan society, particularly in football. He highlighted the need to expand this initiative to other regions of the country to recognize former players across Morocco.
The event served as a symbolic gesture of gratitude for the contributions and dedication of these former players whose efforts have helped develop national football and enhance its global presence.
Several players honored during the ceremony expressed their deep appreciation for the FRMF’s recognition. They did the tribute not only acknowledged their contributions but also brought together the former stars of Moroccan football with the current national team, whose achievements continue to be a source of pride for all Moroccans.
