As medical students continued to strike and protest in the wake of the authorities’ “violent crackdown” and multiple arrests of protesters, Morocco’s government spokesperson Mustapha Baitas highlighted the efforts of the Kingdom’s Ombudsman to defuse the on-going crisis on Thursday in Rabat.
“The medical students’ case is currently in the hands of the Kingdom’s Ombudsman. This institution, which works within a legal framework, manages complaints and mediates between the different parties. We are awaiting the results of this mediation,” he said in a press briefing.
While pharmacy students signed an agreement a few days ago to settle their grievances, medical students are continuing their strike protesting the government’s reduction to their course of study despite efforts to resolve the crisis. They have been on strike for the past 11 months, challenging the Ministry of Higher Education’s decision to reduce medical training from six to seven years.
The Ministry announced earlier this month multiple measures to address the ongoing strikes, including special exam sessions to allow students to continue their courses of study without disruption.
