A collective ritual circumcision in Chefchaouen led to severe medical complications for several children, who now require treatment at the pediatric intensive care unit of Mohammed VI University Hospital in Tangier, northern Morocco.
The collective circumcision took place on 20 September in celebration of Eid Al Mawlid Annabawi and was intended for children from underprivileged families.
The children’s conditions deteriorated last Sunday, necessitating the admission of five children to the pediatric emergency department of Mohammed VI University Hospital in Tangier. The victims ranged in age from five months to 18 months.
Media sources indicate that the condition of two of them is severe and could potentially result in permanent disability.
Human rights organizations have urged the Ministry of Health and Social Protection, local authorities, and all relevant parties to promptly investigate the circumstances surrounding this tragedy.
