Polling stations opened at 8 a.m. local time on Sunday for Tunisia’s presidential election, in which citizens will vote for a candidate to serve a five-year term.
The total number of registered voters reached an estimated 9,753,217, of whom 6.6% reside abroad. Balloting commenced on Friday evening among those citizens living abroad.
The electorate will select one of three candidates including, Ayachi Zammel, a businessman and Founder of the “Azimoun” Movement; Zouhair Maghzaoui, the Secretary General of the People’s Movement; and the current president, Kais Saied.
The preliminary election results will be announced on Monday evening, according to a statement from the spokesperson for the Independent High Authority for Elections.
