A consortium of consultancy firms, led by Spain’s Ineco with CID, secured a major contract for a railway project connecting the northern Moroccan cities of Tetouan and Tangier, Ineco announced in a press release on Wednesday.
The selected consortium will conduct feasibility studies and develop a preliminary project for a new railway system connecting the two cities. The contract represents Ineco’s largest to date in Morocco.
Ineco maintains that the project is a key part of Morocco’s Railway Strategy 2040, which seeks a robust and interconnected rail network using high-speed trains and regional shuttles to promote economic development.
The new urban rail system will enhance Tangier’s connectivity, linking the city center with the airport and a newly constructed football stadium.
The project will also examine a potential new rail connection to the neighboring city of Tetouan to expand passenger capacity and efficiency across a combined 85 kilometers of medium-distance railway lines.
Ineco plans to tailor its analysis to address Morocco’s specific transportation needs. “This contract is our first railway project in Morocco and consolidates our presence in the country, where we already carry out work in the airport sector,” Sergio Vázquez Torrón, President of Ineco said.
“This is an important step that we hope will open up more opportunities for the Spanish railway industry,” Torrón added.
Ineco has also been involved in other Moroccan infrastructure projects, including the development plan for the Mohamed V International Airport in Casablanca.
