Customs authorities in Safi in Morocco’s West Coast destroyed 8.1 tons of cannabis resin on Thursday, along with other prohibited substances that have recently been confiscated by customs officers, the Royal Gendarmerie, and the judicial police, Morocco’s News Agency (MAP) reported.
The destruction operation took place at a facility in the rural commune of Had Hrara, approximately 35 kilometers from Safi. Customs also incinerated 858 kg of traditional kif (a mixture of tobacco and cannabis), 1,240 psychotropic pills, 0.5g of cocaine, 120g of powdered tobacco, and 100g of leaf tobacco.
Abdelbasset El Imami, Customs and Indirect Taxes Liquidator at the Safi office, said that “the provincial National Police services in Safi and the National Judicial Police Brigade thwarted an international drug trafficking attempt involving 8 tons and 125 kg of cannabis resin at the port of Cite des Oceans at the end of last month.”
“This operation is part of the ongoing efforts by various security services against the trafficking of these illicit products, given their harmful effects on the health and safety of citizens,” he noted.
El Imami also reaffirmed the commitment of the Administration of Customs and Indirect Taxes (ADII) to continue working closely with other authorities to ensure public safety.
The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Safi Court of First Instance and other officials oversaw the operation.
