Four unidentified gunmen allegedly shot and killed a man near a five-star resort on Wednesday, prompting fear among sightseers in the tourist area of Cancun, in Mexico, local media reported.
The victim, a 30-year-old Mexican national, was killed on the beach outside Hotel Riu.
Two suspects escaped the scene on a private jet ski, while the others were last seen fleeing on foot, the British media Daily Mail reported.
Mexico’s law enforcement authorities are investigating a potential link between this homicide and drug trafficking or cartel-related offenses.
Hotel Riu released a statement confirming that the victim was neither a guest nor an employee, Mexican media outlet Riviera Maya News reported.
The US Department advised travelers to exercise extreme caution when visiting Mexico.
The Daily Mail said that the surge in cartel-related violence has led to territorial disputes and targeted killings often resulting in injuries or deaths of innocent bystanders.
