Morocco’s first large shelter for stray dogs and cats is being constructed in Agadir to address this widespread issue.
Designed to accommodate approximately 1,000 dogs and 200 cats, the shelter will span 3,941 square meters and comply with international animal protection standards set by the World Health Organization and the World Organisation for Animal Health.
The facility will provide essential veterinary services, including sterilization and vaccination for stray dogs and cats, helping to mitigate the spread of diseases and infections.
Agadir’s Deputy Mayor Hossein Boudrar told MAP that “the initiative seeks to enhance public services related to health and sanitation.” He added that the shelter “will create a safe and sustainable environment for both animals and residents.”
Boudrar, who also oversees Agadir’s municipal hygiene office, highlighted the shelter’s potential to improve the city’s urban landscape, maintain cleanliness, and elevate the quality of life for the city’s inhabitants.
