American athlete Cash Berzolla won the men’s 2024 Wingfoil World Cup held by the Global Wingsports Association (GWA) in Dakhla, Morocco, from Sept 29 to Oct 6.
Berzolla claimed victory over his fellow countryman Otis Buckingham during his heats, scoring a perfect 10-point wave and finishing with a near perfect final score of 18.96 out of 20, the Wingfoil World Tour announced.
“[The win] is beyond words,” said Berzolla. “A final with my best friend from Maui and I’m really stoked to take out the win again in Dakhla. I never expected to get a 10. I just go out there and do my best, and when a wave comes I just hope everything works out.”
The Dakhla winds carried Berzolla to victory in a nearly flawless run during the championship. He **credited the city’s favorable weather conditions for his win.
Moroccan rider Hamouda Houine finished third in the eighth heat of the first round with a score of 5.12, behind Dutch rider Chucho Nonnot (10.03) and Frenchman Malo Guenole, who came in at first place with a score of 16.80.
In the women’s competition, Spain’s Elena Moreno secured a back-to-back win on the GWA Wingfoil World Tour in the Wave discipline, cementing her spot at the top of the rankings going into the final stop of the season in Brazil later in October.
While she is a favorite to win, she said, “Actually, I’m still assuming nothing,” after the final scorecard. “In the water you don’t have time to analyze anything. I’ll have to look at the images later.”
The 2024 Wingfoil World Cup event, held in Dakhla Oum Lamboiur near the Westpoint hotel, is part of Morocco’s ongoing commitment to the socio-sporting and tourism development of the Kingdom. It welcomed 70 participants from 17 countries and has become a key event for surfing, kitesurfing, and wingfoiling.
