Twelve artists from Morocco and several sub-Saharan African countries displayed their art on Wednesday in Rabat as part of the collective exhibition entitled “Rooted in, but not limited by.”
Offering a colorful journey through many African traditions, the two-day exhibition (October 2-3) is part of the second Rabat Cultural and Creative Industries Forum and is a collaboration of independent curator Tania Chorfi, Galerie 38, and the Arkane Association.
The expo celebrates African creativity and innovation, using canvas and paint to visualize the strong connection and cultural heritage shared between Moroccan and sub-Saharan art.
Through art, the artists transcend all geographical boundaries to convey a powerful message that reflects Africa’s desired role on the global stage.
Their works carry the hopes and aspirations of their communities and invite viewers to reflect, explore self-identity, and engage with others. By using creativity as a tool for change, these artists are challenging preconceived notions and stereotypes of Africa.
Exhibition curator Michèle Desmottes said that creating all the pieces in Morocco underscores the Kingdom’s significance as a “land of hospitality” and a source of inspiration, MAP reported.
“These artists are deeply connected to the continent’s heritage and today’s realities,” she said.
The exhibition featured a diverse range of works that showcase the strength and creativity of contemporary Moroccan and African art, firmly positioning Africa within the global history of this artistic movement, she added.
As a true “creative crossroads,” the exhibition gives the public a unique chance to experience the ingenuity and authenticity of African art through a variety of works that challenge the ordinary, subtly blending eras, traditions, innovations, lands, and ideas.
Held under the patronage of King Mohammed VI in collaboration by the Ministry of Youth, Culture, and Communication with support from the European Union, the second Rabat Cultural and Creative Industries Forum reflects upon the future of the cultural sector in Morocco.
