Professors at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy in Casablanca convened an extraordinary general meeting at Ibn Roshd Hospital to discuss recent developments in medical and pharmaceutical education.
The meeting centered on the ongoing controversy surrounding reforms in medical studies and the results of negotiations between students and the Ministry of Health.
Participants expressed significant concern regarding the reform process, which has reduced the duration of medical studies from seven to six years and eliminated a year of theoretical courses. Professors criticized this approach as rushed and non-participatory, emphasizing the lack of meaningful input from educators in shaping these changes.
The assembly voiced dissatisfaction with the scheduling of remedial exam sessions, arguing that it fails to recognize the substantial efforts of faculty members. Many professors feel that the current approach leads to wasted time and resources without delivering tangible benefits for students.
To address these issues, the assembly called for the reinstatement of suspended students and the reversal of the recent dissolution of student offices. In a show of solidarity, professors announced a rally scheduled for Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at 11 AM at the Faculty of Medicine and Pharmacy. They aim to support students and resident doctors facing challenges amid these reforms.
The assembly urged the government to find an urgent solution to the ongoing crisis, warning that if the situation persists, it would hinder their ability to fulfill educational duties, including teaching first-year students and ensuring the smooth operation of exams.
