One year after Morocco’s September 8, 2023 earthquake, doctor and painter Abdelkrim Bennis has opened an art exhibition entitled “Pour ne pas oublier” (“Not To Forget”) to commemorate the solidarity of Moroccans in response to the natural disaster.
During the opening ceremony, Bennis expressed great sadness over the many victims of the devastating earthquake, MAP reported.
Bennis was inspired to use painting as a medium to portray the remarkable efforts of the Moroccan people who came together after the earthquake to help their fellow Moroccans with emergency relief.
His artwork reflects the impact of the tragedy, including the panic in the first moments of the earthquake, the destruction in both rural and urban areas, and the solidarity of Moroccans both in the country and outside the country, such as setting up shelters and providing aid such as medical supplies, blankets, and water.
The exhibition reflects the compassion and unity among Moroccans, creating a lasting graphic memory of the catastrophe while at the same time incorporating a sense of hope.
Bennis, who is a self-taught artist, uses his unique techniques to convey strong emotions through his colorful paintings.
Bennis’s artistic journey began at 15, and after studying medicine, he gradually returned to painting, creating numerous pieces focused on social issues and themes of human experience.
He continues to explore different styles and participates in collective exhibitions, demonstrating his dedication to both medicine and art.
Sponsored by the Ribat Al-Fath Association for Sustainable Development, the exhibition runs from October 1 to 20 at the Mohammad El Fassi gallery in Rabat.
