The growing international momentum supporting Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara underscores the need for a definitive political solution to this regional dispute, grounded solely in the autonomy plan and within the framework of the Kingdom’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity, Morocco’s Foreign Affairs Minister Nasser Bourita said on Friday in New York.
Speaking at a press conference during the 79th UN General Assembly, Bourita said that this ongoing momentum particularly calls on the United Nations to “create harmony and align its perspective with the reality on the ground,” asserting that the Moroccan autonomy plan presented in 2007 is the “only solution” to resolve this conflict while fully respecting Morocco’s territorial integrity and national sovereignty.
The minister also noted that he discussed this issue with FMs and senior officials from member states in bilateral meetings during the event, with many countries reaffirming their support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and the autonomy plan.
The official mentioned Denmark’s position, which has joined the nations supporting the Moroccan plan, highlighting that “currently 19 European Union member states are aligned with this momentum.”
Denmark’s new stance further confirms a broader trend across various regions of Europe, Bourita stated.
