Hezbollah announced on Saturday the death of its leader, Hassan Nasrallah, after an airstrike that targeted the group’s leadership headquarters in southern Beirut on Friday, following confirmation of his assassination by Israel, according to the BBC.
“The esteemed leader of resistance, a noble servant who has returned to his Lord as a great martyr—brave, wise, and faithful, joining the ranks of the eternal martyrs of Karbala in the divine journey following the path of prophets and martyred leaders,” Hezbollah said in a statement.
The statement continued, “Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah, has joined the ranks of the great martyrs he led for nearly thirty years. He guided them from victory to victory, succeeding the Master of Martyrs of Islamic Resistance in 1992, through the liberation of Lebanon in 2000, to the divine victory in 2006, and in all battles of honor and sacrifice, culminating in the struggle to support Palestine, Gaza, and the oppressed Palestinian people.”
Hezbollah did not say how Nasrallah was killed.
Hezbollah’s leadership vowed to “continue jihad against the enemy, supporting Gaza and Palestine, and defending Lebanon and its steadfast people.”
The Israeli army said earlier that Nasrallah was killed in a “targeted strike” on Friday in the group’s underground headquarters beneath a residential building in Dahiyeh – a Hezbollah-controlled southern suburb of Beirut.
