Morocco has climbed four places to 66th in the World Intellectual Property Organization’s (WIPO) Global Innovation Index (GII) for 2024.
The country’s rise in the rankings was driven by its exceptional performance in industrial design applications, where it now ranks first among other middle-income nations. Morocco also excelled in the category of intangible assets, now ranking 11th globally.
Beyond its leadership in industrial designs, Morocco also ranks 30th for trademark applications and 59th for patent applications under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), both measured relative to GDP.
The 2024 GII report further spotlights Morocco’s ability to effectively transform innovation investments into high-performance products and services, with the country improving its position to 47th for innovation outputs, a jump of eight places from last year.
Regionally, Morocco ranks 6th among 38 lower-middle-income economies and 9th out of 18 countries in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.
The Global Innovation Index is an annual report that evaluates the innovation ecosystems of 133 countries based on both quantitative and qualitative indicators. The rankings are based upon an assessment of a wide range of innovation drivers, including institutions, human capital, infrastructure, business sophistication, knowledge and technology outputs, and creative outputs.
