Abdellatif Hammouchi, the head of Moroccan police and intelligence, is playing a key role in enhancing Morocco’s security cooperation around the world, pan-African magazine Jeune Afrique reported.
Hammouchi’s recent official visits to Türkiye and Abu Dhabi, demonstrate the central role the Moroccan security chief is playing in cementing Morocco’s bilateral security ties with other countries. The visits centered around security agreements, training, and counter-terrorism initiatives.
The longstanding security cooperation agreement between Morocco and the UAE dates back to the era of the late King Hassan II, who significantly supported the establishment of the Emirati security apparatus.
Upon arriving in Abu Dhabi, Hammouchi signed a memorandum of understanding between Morocco’s National Police (DGSN) and the General Command of the Abu Dhabi Police.
The agreement will enhance training programs in forensic science, security, and legal sciences, emphasizing the need for “practical expertise” and “capacity building” in security personnel training.
In addition to formal agreements, Hammouchi’s trip included discussions with key Emirati officials, including Abu Dhabi Police Commander-in-Chief General Faris Khalaf Al Mazrouei.
Conversations centered on expanding security cooperation, particularly on artificial intelligence and advanced technologies. Hammouchi also visited the UAE’s “Safe City” project, an initiative that harnesses AI to enhance public safety.
In addition to national challenges, Hammouchi’s visit covered regional and global security issues, especially in light of Israel’s war on Gaza and the war between Hezbollah and Israel.
During his visit, he met with Ali Obaid Al Dhaheri, head of UAE intelligence, to discuss regional and international security, with a particular focus on counterterrorism and emerging threats, areas in which both countries have built a solid reputation over time.
A meeting with Interpol President Ahmed Nasser Al Risi was also on the agenda to discuss rising global threats. “Morocco is a key player in international security, and our cooperation with the Emirates is part of this multilateral dynamic,” Al Risi said after his meeting with Hammouchi.
