Spanish triathlete Vifuela Gonzales and American athlete Eleanor Lawler claimed victory at the inaugural Saïdia International Triathlon, part of the African Cup, on Sunday in northeastern Morocco.
The triathlon competition consisted of three disciplines namely swimming, cycling, and running. In the men’s category, Spain’s Vifuela Gonzales came in first, followed by Australia’s Lachlan Jones and Chile’s Gasper Riveros.
Moroccan athlete Badr Siwane narrowly fell short of a podium finish, placing fourth.
In the women’s event, Eleanor Lawler of the United States secured victory, with Germany’s Franka Rust and Cambodia’s Margot Garabedian ranking second and third, respectively.
Mjid Amahroq, President of the Royal Moroccan Triathlon Federation (FRMTRI), stated that the inaugural stage of the African Cup in Saïdia assembled triathletes from nearly 20 countries across four continents “in a superb setting with a cordial, welcoming atmosphere.”
He commended the exceptional organization, noting that “it serves as encouragement for future events.”
The FMRTRI co-hosted the event with the Saïdia Development Agency (SDS) and Madaëf Sports & Events (MSE), to celebrate the spirit of athletics and promote the Moroccan city appeal.
