An explosion struck a Russian diplomatic convoy in Pakistan’s northwestern region on Sunday, killing one police officer and injuring several others.
The blast targeted a security escort vehicle protecting the convoy, which included Russian Ambassador to Pakistan, Albert Khorev. The incident took place in the Swat district, an area known for militant activity.
The explosion occurred when the lead security vehicle hit an explosive device, believed to be a roadside bomb, according to Pakistani authorities. While multiple police officers were injured in the blast, the Russian Embassy confirmed that no diplomats were harmed.
In an official statement, the Russian Embassy in Islamabad said that the diplomatic convoy was en route through Swat when it was attacked. No diplomats were injured, though several police officers providing security sustained injuries.
Pakistani authorities also confirmed the attack. Deputy Inspector General of Police Mohammad Ali Gandapur told Reuters that “all members of the diplomatic delegation were safely evacuated and relocated to a secure area before being transported to Islamabad.”
Swat police officer Zahidullah Khan added that “sadly, one police officer lost his life, and four others were injured when the convoy’s security detail was struck by the roadside bomb.”
